Imagined Realities and Real Ones

There is an important constraint on our imagined realities: the real reality. It should be obvious to any student of human nature that as a species, we are able to tolerate a fair amount of dissonance in our imagined realities, provided they supply some key psychic and societal purposes. Perhaps Muslim suicide bombers really do believe that their sacrifice will earn them 70 virgins in the hereafter. Somewhat similarly, Republican lawmakers no doubt imagine that if they commit political suicide for the cause they will get a cushy job at some Koch funded stink tank.

Perhaps the collosal anti-Affordable Care Act propaganda campaign will actually convince voters that the House is in the right, and it's Obama and the Senate who cause the shutdown.

In the end, though, real reality will have its day. Or anyway I hope so.
